My journey into meditation started with a need to expand my perspective and a feeling that there should be something to life that is beyond the societal system and frames that I felt I was put into. I sensed societal pressures shaping my behavior, yet I also perceived an ineffable essence beyond conformity, compelling me to embark on a quest to uncover its meaning. I spent a lot of time in front of self-help/ esoteric sections in bookshops. This was the time when I discovered works by Shakti Gawain, Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, and many others. I was wondering whether it was possible to consciously control my reality, or being in charge of my reality and the things that happen in my life, by using the power of my mind, that is, using the power of my conscious intention. Soon I understood that trying to control your reality from the mind level is a dead end and that there is a deeper experience of reality and it is coming from dwelling in your own pure consciousness. I learned about auto training – the relaxation of body, about yogic breathing and importance of emptiness and pure consciousness state. For setting your intention it was important to empty your mind of all thoughts and this is where was the state of purity and a ‘field of all potentialities’ as Deepak Chopra calls it. I suddenly understood that this empty field in my head was a state of pure consciousness. I understood that the thing I was looking for many years outside is to be found inside, it is the immortal, unchangeable and indestructible essence within my inner world, which I will never ever be able to find outside. Over the years, I practiced meditation on and off. There were periods when I would forget about meditation and I would find myself in the whirlpool of life, living by inertia rather than by consciously being in the present moment. It wasn’t until recently that I caught myself in the cycles of negative thinking that was happening for such a long time that I believe this negative thinking patterns were starting to form negative events in my life and the answer to the problem lies inside rather than outside. I realised that something had to be done and that I have to pull myself to another, higher level of consciousness, from where more favorable events can be formed for me. And I instantly knew that the tool I need is – meditation and mindfulness. I started practicing mantra chanting, chakra mediation, vipassana meditation and practicing states of gratitude, non-judgement, non-resistance and all-acceptance. As I was working on my state of mind, constantly observing my appearing thoughts and adjusting how I felt, switching from a ‘minus’ state of negative emotions or feelings to ‘plus’ state of gratitude and non-judgement- the negative thinking eventually subsided. Relationships with other people, and especially with close ones, improved. By being conscious in living my life and practicing self-remembering and gratitude I was able to acknowledge the blessings in everyday things and I felt blessed in having all these people around me. By reducing the constant and tiring thought process and by focusing on my inner essence I was able to find more energy, vitality and space around me and I finally realized that by being mindful we save more energy to do things that enrich us.
It's an intriguing analogy to compare the workings of the mind to a computer program. Our minds indeed have a tendency to project into the future and ruminate on the past. This constant mental activity can sometimes lead to stress, anxiety, or regret, much like how a computer program might execute certain tasks upon activation.
However, unlike a computer program, our minds are incredibly complex and influenced by a multitude of factors such as emotions, our five senses, memories, beliefs, and experiences. While it's true that our brains are wired to anticipate the future and learn from the past, they also possess the remarkable ability to adapt, learn, and change.
One way to navigate this mental programming is through mindfulness, acceptance and self-awareness. By cultivating present-moment awareness through meditation, we can observe our thoughts and emotions without getting swept away by them. This practice can help us break free from the automatic patterns of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, allowing us to live more fully in the present.
